“I work for Erskine Design in Nottingham. Which is nice. You've got choices, you can visit my homepage, take a look at the available downloads or view the blog archives. Please contact me whenever you like. Also, why not subscribe to the RSS feed.”
I have decided to run a series of beginner level tutorials ( becoming more advanced as a follow-up project perhaps...) that explain what CodeIgniter is and how to set it up and start using it. I am then going to use this CodeIgniter install to demonstrate some of the most common and useful php features.
This tutorial set is intended to help people who a have a small amount of php knowledge to expand it quickly and in a way that they could start to apply to projects straight away.
The beauty of CodeIgniter is that there is no rigid structure to the way you use it. After it is set up you could, if you wanted, build sites that are almost purely (x)html, this makes it an ideal learning platform because you can begin with a very simple framework and sprinkle layers of php over it to add functionality as you wish.
I have put up a holding page for part one so check it out. I intend to use a mini site that centres around displaying last fm xml feeds (because “make a blog in ten minutes” tutorials are boring). Part one should be with you shortly, I hope someone finds it useful, I would like to think that people with no php experience could get something out of this - so watch the feed for this site for the release of part one, and give it a go.

I’m looking forward to these tutorials (as are a few other people I know) - I keep coming across CodeIgniter (via ExpressEngine) but without ever having had the time to look into it properly. I’ve got almost no php knowledge, other than being able to hack basic scripts from books etc.

p.s. I think you’ve made a wise move by not pinning yourself down with a timescale for these tutorials, i.e. 24 tutorials in 24 days!

The latest php version 5 with CodeIgniter truly shows off its power. Quicker search queries, cleaner code..just a great program.

Hi Glen,
Just wondering if you are going to continue with the CI series?
Hope so!
